How much does a pool heater cost in Perth?
What a pool heater costs to buy and run in Perth, Western Australia: heat pump, gas and solar prices from national retailers, the cost of each 1 °C on a 50,000 litre pool at Synergy’s A1 and Midday Saver rates and WA’s regulated gas price, the filtration pump hours, BoM months for Perth, what to budget, and the gasfitter licence and compliance notice WA requires.
How much does a pool heater cost in Perth? About $3,296 up for a 13 kW heat pump and $6,550 up for a gas heater at national retailers, before installation. Each 1 °C on a 50,000 litre pool then costs $4.05 on Synergy’s A1 rate, $1.08 in the Midday Saver 9am–3pm window, $12.37 on gas.
The short answer
- Buying: one national retailer lists 13 kW heat pumps at $3,296–$4,630.07 and 20–21 kW at $4,762–$8,104, and one pool shop lists gas heaters at $6,550–$7,425, unit only, on 28 October 2026. We found no Perth installed price we could verify.
- Synergy A1, 33.2621c: a 13 kW heat pump at its maker’s 15 °C full-output COP of 4.78 costs $4.05 per 1 °C on a 50,000 litre pool, $32.40 for an 8 °C warm-up.
- The Perth midday rule: in Synergy’s Midday Saver 9am–3pm band at 8.8520c the same degree costs $1.08, and $0.73 on a 26 °C day. Its 3pm–9pm peak is 55.3253c: $6.73.
- Gas is about 3.1 times dearer per degree: $12.37 at WA’s regulated 17.20c a unit on ATCO’s Perth network, but it adds about 0.76 °C an hour on a 44 kW heater against 0.15 °C for the heat pump.
- Perth’s sun suits solar: BoM’s Perth Metro station averages 29.1 MJ/m² of solar exposure a day in January and 9.5 in June, about 3.1 times less in winter.
| Heater and tariff | Rate | Efficiency used | Per 1 °C | 8 °C warm-up |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heat pump on Synergy Home Plan A1, any hour | 33.2621c per kWh | COP 4.78 (15 °C air, full output) | $4.05 | $32.40 |
| Heat pump on Midday Saver, Super Off Peak 9am–3pm | 8.8520c per kWh | COP 4.78 | $1.08 | $8.64 |
| Heat pump on Midday Saver, Super Off Peak, warm day | 8.8520c per kWh | COP 7.0 (26 °C air, full output) | $0.73 | $5.84 |
| Heat pump on Midday Saver, Off-peak 9pm–9am | 24.3431c per kWh | COP 4.78 | $2.96 | $23.68 |
| Heat pump on Midday Saver, Peak 3pm–9pm | 55.3253c per kWh | COP 4.78 | $6.73 | $53.84 |
| Gas heater, regulated Mid-West/South-West price | 17.20c per unit (3.6 MJ) over 12 units a day | 80.8% (196 MJ/h in, 44 kW out) | $12.37 | $98.96 |
| Solar collectors | No fuel; the pump’s electricity only | Depends on sun: Perth averages 29.1 MJ/m² a day in January, 9.5 in June | Not worked | Not worked |
How much does a pool heater cost in Perth to run?
Running cost is three numbers multiplied: the heat the pool needs (58.1 kWh for each 1 °C on 50,000 litres), what the heater burns to make it, and the Perth tariff. The table works all three for each Synergy band and for gas.
For a heat pump, the efficiency is the maker’s own: its 13 kW inverter delivers 8.5 kW in 15 °C air for 1.78 kW of input, a COP of 4.78, and 7.0 at full output in 26 °C air. At 4.78 each degree takes 12.2 kWh. On Synergy’s Home Plan A1 at 33.2621c that is $4.05. At the generic COP of 5 used on our cost-to-heat page it is $3.87; the difference is the COP.
The Perth midday rule: run a Perth pool heat pump between 9am and 3pm on Synergy’s Midday Saver, where Super Off Peak is 8.8520c a kWh, and each 1 °C on a 50,000 litre pool costs about $1.08 instead of $4.05; the air is warmer then too, which lifts the COP.
The plan has conditions. Synergy says Midday Saver is for residential customers and needs an advanced (AMI) meter; where a suburb does not have AMI yet, the plan is not available. Its 3pm–9pm Peak of 55.3253c applies to the whole house, and its supply charge is 132.7806c a day against A1’s 119.2419c: $49.42 a year more. At $2.97 saved per degree, the pool alone covers that after about 16.6 °C of heating a year. Check your own household use before switching; the heater must also be on a timer, which the heater timer rule requires outside NSW.
Gas pool heater running cost in Perth
Perth’s mains gas runs on ATCO’s Mid-West and South-West gas distribution systems, which the Economic Regulation Authority says serve the Perth greater metropolitan area including Mandurah. Energy Policy WA sets the maximum price retailers can charge small users on a standard contract there: for 2026–27, a 27.61c daily supply charge, 19.06c a unit for the first 12 units a day and 17.20c beyond, where a unit is 3.6 MJ. Retailers can offer less on market contracts, and can add fees the government does not regulate.
One gas pool heater maker rates its smallest residential model at 196 MJ an hour of natural gas in for 44 kW of heat out, which is 80.8% efficient. Each 1 °C on a 50,000 litre pool takes 71.9 units of gas; a heater burns 12 units in about 13 minutes, so almost all of it is at 17.20c: $12.37 a degree. An hour of running is $9.36 and adds about 0.76 °C, before losses.
In Perth, gas costs about 3.1 times more per degree than a heat pump on Synergy A1, and buys speed: about 0.76 °C an hour against 0.15 °C for a 13 kW heat pump in 15 °C air. That suits a pool heated for weekends. WA law requires all gasfitting work to be done by a person with a gasfitting licence from Building and Energy, and the fitter must give you a Notice of Completion within 48 hours. What does a pool heater cost to buy for my pool in Perth?
We found no Perth-specific installed price list that we could verify, and the national cost guides we checked do not publish a Perth pool-heating page. These are unit prices from businesses that sell nationally, read on 28 October 2026, before installation:
- Heat pump, 13 kW (one maker advises 30–50 m³ pools): $3,296–$4,630.07 across four makes at one national retailer.
- Heat pump, 20–21 kW: $4,762–$8,104 at the same retailer.
- Gas heater, 196–420 MJ/h: $6,550–$7,425 at one online pool shop, the same price for natural gas and LPG.
- Solar collectors: one distributor’s recommended retail price for a 1.2 × 3.85 m rigid panel is listed at both $707 and $637.51 on the same April 2026 page, about $137.99–$153.03 per m², uninstalled.
Installation is extra and varies with the run of pipe, the switchboard, the gas line and roof access. Ask for the unit, plumbing, electrical, gas or roof work and any cover as separate lines. WA’s Building and Energy says only licensed electricians and gasfitters may work on a home’s electrical or gas installations. Unit prices by kW for the whole country are on how much a pool heat pump costs and installed ranges on what a pool heater costs installed.
When does a Perth pool need heating?
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Perth Metro station (1994–2026) gives the shape of the season. These are air temperatures, not pool water:
| Month | Mean maximum | Mean minimum | Mean daily solar exposure |
|---|---|---|---|
| September | 20.7 °C | 9.8 °C | 17.2 MJ/m² |
| October | 23.5 °C | 11.7 °C | 22.6 MJ/m² |
| November | 26.8 °C | 14.4 °C | 26.8 MJ/m² |
| January | 31.4 °C | 18.2 °C | 29.1 MJ/m² |
| March | 29.7 °C | 16.9 °C | 20.6 MJ/m² |
| April | 25.9 °C | 13.8 °C | 15.2 MJ/m² |
| May | 22.5 °C | 10.5 °C | 11.4 MJ/m² |
| June | 19.5 °C | 8.7 °C | 9.5 MJ/m² |
In the shoulder months the nights average about 10–14 °C, which is when a heat pump works hardest and the 15 °C rating is the honest one; daytime maximums are about 21–27 °C, which is why heating in the 9am–3pm window helps twice. Solar exposure is high from October to March, which suits solar collectors for stretching the season, and falls to about a third of January’s by June.
Whatever the heater, a cover does most of the work at night; choosing a pool cover covers the options, and the building code requires one with a gas or heat pump heater outside NSW. Whether heating pays at all is on is a pool heater worth it. If heating is part of a new pool, compare pool quotes with the heater as a line item; businesses in Perth are listed in our directory, and the whole build is priced on what a pool costs in Perth.
