How much does a pool heater cost to buy and install?
What a pool heater costs to buy and install in Australia for a concrete or fibreglass pool, by type: heat pump, gas and solar, sized for a 50,000 litre pool, plus the cover needed for building-code compliance outside NSW, with NCC 2025 dates for Queensland and Victoria. Cost-guide ranges are set against installer, retailer and manufacturer list prices read on 4 October 2026, with the sizing rules that move the price (kW of heat pump, MJ/h of gas, square metres of solar collector). It also covers the cover and time switch that the National Construction Code requires with gas or heat pump heating, where that rule applies, and when NCC 2025 takes effect in each state.
For a 50,000 litre pool, one 2026 cost guide puts a heat pump at about $4,800–$11,500 installed, gas at $3,500–$9,000+ and solar at $4,000–$9,500. Installer and retailer prices differ, especially for gas. With a gas heater or heat pump, the building code also requires a cover and time switch, except in NSW.
The short answer
- Heat pump: $4,800–$11,500 installed for 30,000–50,000+ litres on one cost guide. An SEQ installer publishes $7,150 for 19 kW and $10,550 for 24 kW supplied and installed.
- Gas: $3,500–$9,000+ installed on the same guide, but retailers list the heater alone at $5,500–$9,500. A gas line can cost from about $500 to upwards of $3,500.
- Solar: $4,000–$9,500 installed for a large pool on the cost guide. SPASA recommends collector area of at least 80% of the pool’s surface, about 32 m² for a 10 × 4 m pool.
- Size a heat pump on its cool-air rating. One maker’s 24 kW model is rated 24.2 kW at 27°C air but 16 kW at 15°C, a third less.
- The NCC cover rule adds $900–$3,140 to a gas or heat pump job on a 40 m² pool (a cover alone to a blanket and roller installed). Housing Provisions 13.7.8 does not apply in NSW.
| Heater type | Size for about 50,000 L | Cost guide, installed | Other published prices (who publishes them) | Cover and time switch required by the NCC? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heat pump | 13–17 kW for 30,000–50,000 L, 21 kW+ above (cost guide); 18–25 kW (Sydney installer); 24 kW for 45,000 L and above (SEQ installer) | $4,800–$8,000 (30–50k L); $7,000–$11,500+ (50k L+) | SEQ installer: 19 kW $7,150, 24 kW $10,550 installed. Sydney installer: 18–25 kW $5,238–$7,176. Maker list price, unit only: 20 kW $7,229.55, 24 kW $8,751.57 | Yes, except NSW (13.7.8) |

| Solar | SPASA: at least 80% of pool surface, about 32 m² for 40 m² of pool; AS3634 minimum 60% in ideal Sydney conditions | $4,000–$6,000 strip; $6,500–$9,500 rigid panels (large pool) | Sydney cost guide: $2,875–$6,900 installed. Sydney installer: $3,000–$7,000. Distributor list price for 7 rigid panels (32.3 m²): $4,463–$4,949, uninstalled | No cover or heater time switch; the circulation-pump time switch still applies |
| Cover for a 40 m² pool | Whole water surface | – | Solar cover $22.50 per m², about $900 (retailer); blanket on a stainless roller $2,190–$3,140 supplied and installed (SEQ installer, by pool length) | This is the cover; ask its R-value (code minimum R0.05) |
How much does a pool heat pump cost?
A pool heat pump is priced by its output in kW, and the kW you need depends on pool volume and how cold your air gets. Published prices read on 4 October 2026:
- A national cost guide (February 2026): 13–17 kW for 30,000–50,000 litres at $4,800–$8,000 installed; 21 kW+ above 50,000 litres at $7,000–$11,500+.
- A south-east Queensland pool installer (updated August 2026): $4,125 for 9 kW, $5,220 for 13 kW, $7,150 for 19 kW (35,000–45,000 L) and $10,550 for 24 kW (45,000 L and above), supplied and installed.
- A Sydney heat pump installer: 18–25 kW units for 20,000–50,000 L at $5,238–$7,176, plus installation of $500–$1,840. The same page also describes its price range as installed, so ask.
- One maker’s 2026 list prices, unit only, GST included: 20 kW $7,229.55, 24 kW $8,751.57, 28 kW $10,178.01.
Size on the cool-air figure. One maker rates the same unit at 24.2 kW in 27°C air and 16 kW in 15°C air. If you want to swim in October or April, the 15°C figure is the one that has to heat your pool.
For a 50,000 litre pool, published heat pump prices run from about $4,800 to $11,500 installed, and the cool-air rating, not the headline kW, decides which size you need.
How much does a gas pool heater cost?
Gas heaters are rated in MJ/h of gas input. A cost guide sizes 250–300 MJ/h for 30,000–50,000 litres and 400 MJ/h+ above, and publishes $3,500–$6,000 and $5,000–$9,000+ installed including gas line labour.
Retail prices are higher than that guide implies. One pool shop lists a gas heater range at $6,550 (196 MJ/h input on natural gas, 44 kW output, per the maker’s datasheet), $6,750 (278 MJ/h, 62 kW) and $7,425 (420 MJ/h, 94 kW), the same for natural gas and LPG. Another retailer lists a second make at $5,500 for 200 MJ/h and $9,500 for 400 MJ/h. Those are heater-only prices, so the cost guide’s installed totals look low; we show both rather than averaging them.
The gas line is the swing item. The same cost guide says a connection next to an existing exterior line costs around $500, and a 30-metre underground run beneath pavers upwards of $3,500. Without mains gas, LPG cylinders and their base add to it.
A gas pool heater quote should state the MJ/h, the gas type, and the length of gas line included, because the line can cost as much as a small heater. Running costs for gas against a heat pump are on pool heating compared: solar vs gas vs heat pump; this page does not repeat them.
How much does solar pool heating cost?
Solar is priced by collector area, and the area follows the pool. SPASA, the industry association, says AS3634 suggests a minimum collector area of 60% of the pool’s surface area, only in ideal conditions in the Sydney, Newcastle and Wollongong areas, and that SPASA recommends at least 80% for most installations.
Worked for a 10 × 4 m pool (40 m² surface, about 50,000 litres at 1.25m average depth): 80% is 32 m² of collector. At a distributor’s list price of $637.51–$707 for a 1.2 × 3.85m rigid panel (4.62 m², two prices on the same page), seven panels give 32.3 m² for $4,463–$4,949 before installation. Rubber strip material is advertised from $67 per m², about $2,144 for 32 m², uninstalled.
Installed, a cost guide publishes $4,000–$6,000 for strip and $6,500–$9,500 for rigid panels on a large pool; a Sydney cost guide publishes $2,875–$6,900, and a Sydney solar installer $3,000–$7,000.
Solar pool heating is priced per square metre of collector, and SPASA’s 80% rule turns a 40 m² pool into 32 m² of roof.
Does my heated pool need a cover by law?
If it is heated by gas or a heat pump, yes in most of Australia. ABCB Housing Provisions 13.7.8 says that where some or all of a pool’s heating is by a gas heater or a heat pump, the pool must have a cover with a minimum R-Value of 0.05 (unless in a conditioned space) and a time switch to control the heater. A time switch is also required on the circulation pump. The wording is the same in the 2022 and 2025 editions.
- NSW: the NCC 2022 Housing Provisions carry the state variation ‘13.7.8 does not apply in NSW’. Ask your certifier what applies instead.
- Which edition applies: the ABCB lists NCC 2025 as starting on 1 May 2026 in Victoria, and in the ACT and WA with 12-month transitions; on 1 May 2027 in NSW, Queensland and SA (BCA); Tasmania is in transition to 1 May 2027; the NT has not adopted it.
- Apartments and commercial pools fall under Volume One, where NCC 2025 clause J8D4 adds a minimum 90% gross thermal efficiency for gas heaters. That clause is not in the Housing Provisions.
So the cover belongs in the price of a gas or heat pump installation: about $900 for a 40 m² solar cover alone at one retailer’s $22.50 per m², or $2,190–$3,140 for a blanket on a stainless roller supplied and installed (one installer’s prices by pool length). Ask the cover supplier to state its R-value. energy.gov.au says bubble covers can cut heat losses from a heated pool by as much as 75%. The cover’s own payback is worked in pool cover cost and payback, and the time-switch rule in do I need a timer on my pool heater.
Add $900–$3,140 for the cover to any gas or heat pump quote outside NSW: on a 50,000 litre pool, that takes a heat pump to about $5,700–$14,640 and gas to $4,400–$12,140 on the cost guide’s ranges. To price heating as part of a new pool, compare pool quotes; listed businesses cover Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne.
