Is a pool heater worth it?
Whether a pool heater is worth the cost: the months each capital averages 25°C or more on BoM records, from NSW and Queensland to Victoria, the shoulder months a heat pump adds, what it costs to run at 2026–27 regulated prices, and the cover the building code’s compliance rule requires.
Is a pool heater worth it for my pool? Usually, in the southern capitals, if it is covered: Sydney averages 25°C or more in only 3 months and Melbourne 2, and a heat pump adds up to 5 shoulder months for about $58 a month in Sydney. In Darwin it adds nothing.
The short answer
- The test is your month count. On BoM averages, Brisbane has 8 months with a mean maximum of 25°C or more, Perth 6, Adelaide and Canberra 4, Sydney 3, Melbourne 2, Hobart none and Darwin all 12.
- A heater buys the shoulder months that average 20–25°C: 5 in Sydney and Melbourne, 4 in Brisbane and Hobart, 3 in Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.
- Running cost per extra month, covered: about $45 in Melbourne’s CitiPower zone, $58 in Sydney and $73 in Adelaide for a 50,000 litre pool, at 2026–27 regulated rates; uncovered, four times that.
- The worked season: 5 shoulder months in Sydney cost about $289 to run covered. Add a $4,800–$8,000 installed heat pump (one cost guide) and five seasons work out at about $250–$378 per extra month of swimming.
- No cover, no deal. energy.gov.au says a bubble cover can cut a heated pool’s heat loss by as much as 75%; uncovered, the same Sydney season runs about $1,155.

Is a pool heater worth it in my city?
Count your warm months first. Most people swim comfortably unheated when the days are hot, so the Bureau of Meteorology’s mean maximum temperature is a fair first test: months averaging 25°C or more are your natural season, and months averaging 20–25°C are the shoulder a heater can turn into swimming months. These are air temperatures, not water temperatures, so they are a guide to the season, not a promise of a water temperature.
On that test a heater adds 3 to 5 months in the south: Sydney goes from 3 months to up to 8, Melbourne from 2 to up to 7, Adelaide and Canberra from 4 to up to 7. Brisbane already has 8 warm months and gains up to 4. Darwin averages over 30°C every month and gains nothing. Hobart has no month at 25°C, so a heater is not an extension there; it is the season.
The shoulder-month rule: a pool heater is worth it in proportion to the 20–25°C months your city has, priced at about $45–$73 a month to run with a cover on a 50,000 litre pool in the capitals we priced.
What does a heat pump cost for each extra month?
The arithmetic is on our cost to heat a pool page and we use it unchanged. Warming 50,000 litres by 1°C takes 58.1 kWh of heat. One heat pump maker sizes for a night-time loss of up to 2°C and says a heat pump delivers on average about 5 times the heat it consumes. So holding temperature for 30 nights takes about {MONTH_KWH:.0f} kWh of electricity, uncovered.
At the 2026–27 regulated flat rates that is about $181 a month in Melbourne’s CitiPower zone, $195 in Brisbane, $231 in Sydney, $232 in Perth and $292 in Adelaide. With a bubble cover cutting heat loss by up to 75%, energy.gov.au’s best case, it falls to $45–$73.
Shoulder months are colder at night than the summer months the 2°C figure was sized for, and a heat pump makes less heat per kWh in cold air, so read these as floors. What a pool heat pump costs to run per hour shows how the cheap midday tariff windows change it.
A covered 50,000 litre pool costs about $45 to $73 a month to keep warm with a heat pump at 2026–27 regulated rates, at one maker’s 2°C-a-night sizing figure.
Is a pool heater worth it over five seasons?
Worked, Sydney: 5 shoulder months × $57.77 covered = about $289 a season to run. One cost guide prices a heat pump for a 30,000–50,000 litre pool at $4,800–$8,000 installed. Over five seasons that is $4,800–$8,000 plus 5 × $289, spread over 25 extra swimming months: about $250–$378 per extra month. Five seasons is an illustration, not a life expectancy for the unit.
Uncovered, the same Sydney season costs about $1,155 to run, four times as much, which is why NCC Housing Provisions 13.7.8 requires a cover of at least R0.05 and a heater time switch when a pool is heated by gas or a heat pump, everywhere except NSW, where the clause does not apply; whether your pool legally needs a cover has the rule. Above 50,000 litres the same guide prices heat pumps at $7,000–$11,500 or more installed.
Whether that is worth it is your call: a family that swims every day in October and April gets a low cost per swim; a pool used on summer weekends does not. The installed prices by type are on how much a pool heater costs.
In Sydney, a covered heat pump adds up to five swimming months for about $289 a season to run, or about $250–$378 per extra month over five seasons including a $4,800–$8,000 installation.
When a pool heater is not worth it
- In the tropics. Darwin Airport averages a maximum above 30°C in every month; the problem there is the opposite.
- Without a cover. Uncovered running costs are four times the covered figure on the same assumptions.
- For a pool you use a few weekends a year. A heat pump holds temperature slowly; for occasional use the comparison in solar vs gas vs heat pump pool heating explains why gas or solar may suit better.
- In a shaded pool. Why a pool is so cold shows how surface heat loss outruns the sun; fix the cover and the shade question first.
If you are building, price the heater, the cover and the extra power supply as separate lines and compare pool quotes with and without them; pool businesses are listed for Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.
