How much does a pool heat pump cost?

What a pool heat pump costs to buy in Australia, by rated kW and pool volume: unit prices for four makes at one retailer and one maker’s 2026 list, the installation items a quote should list (licensed electrician, concrete base, plumbing valves, cover and time switch, with the NSW exception), warranty differences, and a worked 50,000 litre example for a concrete or fibreglass pool and budget.

A pool heat pump costs about $2,375–$3,521 for a 9 kW unit and $8,488–$10,178 for 28 kW, unit only, on retail and maker list prices read 22 October 2026. For a 50,000 L pool (13–21 kW on one maker’s advice) that is $3,296–$7,230, plus $500–$1,840 installation on one Sydney installer’s figures.

The short answer

  • Price climbs with kW: $2,375–$3,521 for 9 kW, $3,296–$4,630 for 13 kW, $4,762–$7,230 for 20–21 kW and $8,488–$10,178 for 28 kW, unit only, across four makes at one retailer on 22 October 2026.
  • Same size class, up to 52% apart: at 20–21 kW the cheapest make is $4,762 and the dearest $7,229.55. Compare the 15°C air rating, the warranty and the input current, not just the label kW.
  • Installation is extra: one Sydney installer publishes $500–$1,840 on top of unit prices it says exclude installation. A 3-way valve kit is $292–$324 and a heat pump controller $588–$667 at one retailer.
  • The 10 A plug line: one maker lists its 9 and 13 kW models with a 10 A plug and its 16 kW and larger models with a single-phase supply and no plug, which means an electrician. Another maker’s 17 kW unit draws up to 10.17 A.
  • Outside NSW, add a cover and a time switch: NCC Housing Provisions 13.7.8 requires both where a pool is heated by a heat pump or gas.
The price-per-kW ladder: pool heat pump unit prices by rated output for four makes at one national retailer and one maker’s 2026 list (retailer- and maker-published, inc GST, read 22 October 2026), with one Sydney installer’s published installation range added, one maker’s advised pool volume, its output in 15°C air and its maximum input current. How much does a pool heat pump cost for my pool size?

Price follows rated output in kW, and the kW you need follows pool volume, season and whether the pool is covered. The ladder above puts both side by side. One maker’s specification sheet advises 13 kW for 30–50 m³, 17 kW for 35–65 m³ and 21 kW for 45–80 m³ of pool, so a 50,000 litre pool sits anywhere from the 13 kW row to the 20–21 kW row.

Worked for 50,000 litres: the cheapest 13 kW unit at the retailer we read is $3,296; the dearest 20–21 kW unit is $7,229.55. Add one Sydney installer’s published installation range of $500–$1,840 and the job is about $3,796 to $9,069.55, before a cover. Which row is right for your pool is worked on what size heat pump you need; this page does not repeat the sizing.

The price-per-kW ladder: on one make’s range, a pool heat pump costs $227–$329 per rated kW at retail, but $340–$507 per kW of heat it actually makes in 15°C air. The second figure is the one that matters for spring and autumn swimming. On one maker’s spec sheet the 21 kW model makes 14 kW in 15°C air, so its $4,762 buys about $340 per working kW; the 28 kW model makes 18.2 kW for $9,220, about $507.

Why do two heat pumps with the same kW cost so different?

At one retailer on 22 October 2026, four makes at 20–21 kW ran from $4,762 to $7,229.55. At 9 kW the spread was $2,375 to $3,521. The one make whose maker publishes a list price was sold at exactly that list price, and it was the dearest in five of the six size classes. A Sydney installer’s own 2026 range, $4,125 to $10,348+ for the unit, sits across the same span.

What you can check on paper before paying more:

  • Output in 15°C air, not just the headline kW. The headline is measured in warm air, 26°C on one spec sheet. One maker’s 17 kW model makes 11 kW in 15°C air.
  • Warranty in years, and whether it is conditional on an authorised installer. One maker’s 2026 list advertises 7 years on one range.
  • Input current and power supply. It decides whether you need a new circuit (below).
  • Noise. One spec sheet gives 40.6–52.5 dB(A) at 1 m for its 9 kW model and 43.8–58.9 for 28 kW; ask for the figure if the unit sits near a bedroom or boundary.

Running cost does not follow price: two units with the same input kW cost the same per hour. That is worked on what a pool heat pump costs to run.

Pool heat pump installation: what the quote should list

One Sydney heat pump installer publishes installation at $500–$1,840, depending on complexity, location and electrical requirements, and says its unit prices exclude installation. The items behind that range, from makers’ manuals and spec sheets:

Installation itemWhat the maker or retailer saysPublished price
Electrical connectionOne maker’s manual: all electrical work by a licensed electrician to AS/NZS 3000, cable and fuse sized to the unit, and an isolating switch fitted next to the heat pump. One maker’s list: 9 and 13 kW with a 10 A plug; 16 kW and up a single-phase supply with no plug; its 41 kW model three phaseInside the installer’s $500–$1,840; a new circuit is the item that moves it
BaseA firm base, such as a concrete slab, with rubber mounts, set with a slight fall so condensate drains (one maker’s manual)Not published separately
Clearance500 mm in front, 300 mm at the sides and back (one maker’s spec sheet)None, if the spot exists
Plumbing and valvesA 3-way valve kit for 40 mm or 50 mm pressure pipe$292–$324 (one retailer)
ControllerLinks the heat pump to the filter pump or runs a standalone heating pump$588–$667 (one retailer)
Cover and time switchRequired with a heat pump by NCC Housing Provisions 13.7.8, except in NSWPriced on the pool cover page

The 10 A plug line: a pool heat pump up to about 13–14 kW can come with a plug for an ordinary 10 A socket; above that, budget for an electrician to wire it in. One maker’s spec sheet shows why: its 17 kW model draws up to 10.17 A in 15°C air and its 21 kW model 13.21 A.

Outside NSW the cover is part of the price, not an extra: the heater timer and cover rule sets out the clause and pool cover cost and payback prices the cover.

Is a heat pump the right heater to price?

Only if you want a held temperature over a long season. Solar vs gas vs heat pump compares the three, what a pool heater costs sets heat pump prices beside gas and solar installed prices, and whether a pool heater is worth it works the months it adds in each capital.

If the heat pump is part of a new pool or an equipment upgrade, ask every quote for the model, its output in 15°C air, its input current, the warranty and the installation items in the table above as separate lines, then compare pool quotes on the same specification. Common questions

How much does a pool heat pump cost in Australia?
About $2,375–$3,521 for 9 kW, $3,296–$4,630 for 13 kW, $4,762–$7,230 for 20–21 kW and $8,488–$10,178 for 28 kW, unit only, at one retailer and one maker’s list on 22 October 2026.
How much does it cost to install a pool heat pump?
One Sydney installer publishes $500–$1,840 on top of the unit. Valves ($292–$324) and a controller ($588–$667) may be extra; a new electrical circuit is the item that moves the price most.
What size heat pump for a 50,000 litre pool, and what does it cost?
One maker advises 13 kW (30–50 m³) to 21 kW (45–80 m³). Unit prices for 13–21 kW ran $3,296–$7,229.55; with installation, about $3,796–$9,070.
Does a pool heat pump need its own circuit?
Larger ones do. One maker lists its 9 and 13 kW models with a 10 A plug and 16 kW and up with a single-phase supply and no plug. Another maker’s manual requires a licensed electrician, wiring to AS/NZS 3000 and an isolating switch next to the unit.
Do I need a pool cover with a heat pump?
Yes outside NSW. NCC 2022 Housing Provisions 13.7.8 requires a cover of at least R0.05 and a heater time switch where a pool is heated by a heat pump or gas; the clause does not apply in NSW.
