How long does a pool liner last?

How long a vinyl pool liner lasts in Australia, measured by the warranty makers put in writing: above-ground and inground liner periods, the pro-rata price you pay to claim, frame-pool warranties, what a chlorinator set too high does, and how vinyl compares with a concrete or fibreglass finish.

How long does a pool liner last? Makers only put the warranty in writing: one Australian maker gives above-ground liners 5 years pro-rata, 8 if registered, and inground liners 12 years, saying 15+ years inground is “not unusual”. Frame pool liners carry 180 days to 2 years.

The short answer

  • Above-ground vinyl, 0.50 mm: 5-year pro-rata warranty from one Australian maker, upgraded free to 8 years if you register it.
  • Inground vinyl: 12-year pro-rata warranty from the same maker, which says a 15+ year life is not unusual with care; we found no independent lifespan figure.
  • Frame pools: one major maker’s published warranty sheets give 180 days, 1 year or 2 years on the liner and frame, by range, with nothing after.
  • Pro-rata shrinks fast: on the Australian schedule a defect in year 4 means paying 60% of the then-current retail price; a US 15-year seam warranty charges 80% from season 7.
  • The 4 ppm rule: the Australian maker says free chlorine over 4 ppm can bleach the liner and dramatically reduce its life, and an empty pool for more than 48 hours voids its warranty.

How long does a pool liner last in an inground pool?

The only figures in writing come from makers and installers. One Australian liner maker gives its inground liners a 12-year pro-rata warranty against defective workmanship and material, and says on its replacement page that most last well beyond that, with a 15+ year life expectancy “not unusual” with proper care and in the right conditions. An installer quoted on our pool liner replacement cost page claims 15 or more years. Both are vendor claims; we found no independent survey of liner life.

So treat the warranty as the floor and the claims as the hope. A 12-year pro-rata warranty tells you the maker expects the material to outlast 12 years in normal use, and the exclusions tell you what kills liners early.

An inground vinyl liner carries a 12-year pro-rata warranty from one Australian maker, which says a 15+ year life is not unusual with care.

How long does a pool liner last above ground?

It depends on the kind of above-ground pool. A steel-wall pool uses a replaceable vinyl liner: the Australian maker’s 0.50 mm above-ground liners carry a 5-year pro-rata warranty, upgraded free to 8 years if you register the warranty on its website. Its 2020 warranty card, hosted by a retailer, states 8 years on 0.5 mm. The two documents describe the cover differently: the website says defective workmanship or material, while the card says it covers the workmanship of converting the material into a liner, not the fabric itself. Ask which terms apply to the liner you buy.

A frame or inflatable-ring pool is different: the liner is the pool. One major frame-pool maker’s published warranty sheets give 2 years on its premium frame range, 1 year on its metal and prism frame ranges and 180 days on its entry inflatable-ring range, covering manufacturing defects only, with punctures, tears, abrasions and ordinary wear and tear excluded. Those are its US sheets; the card in an Australian box may differ, so check yours.

A steel-wall above-ground pool’s liner carries 5 to 8 years of pro-rata warranty; a frame pool’s liner carries 180 days to 2 years.

What a pro-rata liner warranty is actually worth

Pro-rata means the maker replaces a defective liner but charges you a rising share of the retail price as the years pass. The Australian maker’s schedule for above-ground liners: first season no charge, then 20% in year 2, 40% in year 3, 60% in year 4, 80% in year 5, 85% in year 6, 90% in year 7 and 95% in year 8, of the suggested retail price at the time of claim. Fitting, water and chemicals are yours in every year; the US 15-year seam warranty says so explicitly.

Worked: a seam fails in year 5. Under the Australian schedule you pay 80% of the liner’s then-current retail price for the replacement, plus the cost of draining, fitting and refilling. Under the US seam warranty you would pay 60% in the fifth season. The prices of those jobs are on what it costs to replace a pool liner; we do not repeat them here.

The Australian card also asks for claims in writing within seven days of the defect becoming apparent, and the warranty does not pass to a buyer if you sell. Its own card notes that Australian Consumer Law guarantees apply regardless of the warranty.

By year 5, one Australian maker’s pro-rata liner warranty charges 80% of the retail price for a replacement, before fitting and water.

What shortens a pool liner’s life?

The makers’ exclusions double as a list of what ends liners early. From the Australian maker’s card and FAQ:

  • Chlorine over 4 ppm. It says free chlorine above 4 ppm can bleach the liner and cause premature ageing, “dramatically reducing its life expectancy”, and recommends 1–3 ppm (up to 4 for a heated pool) with pH 7.4–7.8.
  • An empty pool. Emptying the pool and leaving it empty for more than 48 hours can cause irreparable damage and voids the warranty.
  • Undissolved chemicals and floating chlorinators that sit in one place and bleach a spot.
  • Vegetation, such as nut grass, growing through or decaying against the liner.
  • Sharp equipment: broken brooms and vacuum heads cut vinyl.

It also says most fading below the waterline comes from the sanitiser, not the sun. Water balance guidance is in how to lower pH in a pool.

The 4 ppm rule: one Australian liner maker says free chlorine above 4 ppm bleaches vinyl and dramatically shortens its life.

How long does a pool liner last with salt water?

The makers we read do not set a different life for salt pools. They set the limit by free chlorine, and a salt chlorinator makes chlorine. The Australian maker’s FAQ says water balance should be checked regularly, “especially if the pool has an automated chlorinator”, before giving the 4 ppm warning. So a salt pool is not hard on a liner by itself; a chlorinator left on too high an output is.

What salt level a pool should run at and saltwater vs chlorine pools cover the settings. If the liner is past saving, compare quotes for a reline against a resurface; builders and renovators are listed for Sydney and Brisbane.

Common questions

How long does an above-ground pool liner last?
One Australian maker warrants its 0.50 mm above-ground liners for 5 years pro-rata, or 8 years if registered, according to its warranty page. Frame-pool liners carry 180 days to 2 years from one major maker.
How long does a vinyl liner last in an inground pool?
The same Australian maker warrants inground liners for 12 years pro-rata and says a 15+ year life is not unusual with care. That is vendor-published; we found no independent lifespan figure.
What does pro-rata mean on a pool liner warranty?
You pay a rising share of the retail price for a replacement. On one Australian schedule: nothing in the first season, then 20% in year 2 rising to 95% in year 8, plus fitting and water.
Does a salt water pool damage a vinyl liner?
The makers we read set the limit by free chlorine, not salt: over 4 ppm can bleach the liner. A salt chlorinator set too high is the risk, so test regularly.
Does the liner warranty transfer when I sell the house?
Not on the Australian maker’s card we read: no warranty is given if the purchaser sells the property. Australian Consumer Law guarantees, which the card says cannot be excluded, are separate from it.
