Pool tile costs about $33–$130 per square metre for glass mosaic and $58–$90 for ceramic mosaic at two Australian retailers on 18 October 2026, before laying. A 300 mm waterline band on an 8 × 4 m concrete pool is 7.2 m², so its tile costs roughly $260–$1,030 with a 10% cutting allowance.

The short answer

  • Glass mosaic: $33–$130 per m². A specialist pool-tile retailer prices most of its glass range at $129.94/m²; a general tile retailer's glass pool mosaics run $33–$75/m², several lines on sale.
  • Ceramic mosaic: $58.06–$89.96 per m² at the specialist retailer, the usual waterline tile on a concrete pool.
  • Porcelain $34–$68 and limestone $52–$55 per m² at the general retailer, mostly surround and coping formats; the specialist quotes porcelain on request.
  • The waterline band is small: perimeter × band height. An 8 × 4 m pool has a 24 m perimeter, so 3.6 m² at 150 mm or 7.2 m² at 300 mm.
  • Patterned glass borders are sold by the metre: $55–$65 per lineal metre, $1,320–$1,560 for 24 m, more than plain glass mosaic costs for a 300 mm band.

How much does pool tile cost per square metre?

To buy, glass mosaic pool tile costs about $33 to $130 per square metre and ceramic mosaic about $58 to $90, on the prices two Australian retailers displayed on 18 October 2026. The two retailers disagree by up to almost four times on glass: a specialist pool-tile retailer prices 22 of its 35 glass mosaic lines at $129.94/m², while a general tile retailer's glass pool mosaics run $33–$75/m², several marked down to $39 from $47–$57. Both are retailer-published, tile-only prices; adhesive, grout, removal and the tiler are extra.

On a waterline band the tile itself is a small cost: a 300 mm band on an 8 × 4 m pool is 7.2 m², and buying 7.92 m² to allow for cuts costs about $460–$712 in ceramic or $261–$1,029 in glass, depending on the retailer and range. The quotable version: pool tile is priced per square metre, but a waterline band is only perimeter × height, so on a family pool the tile is hundreds of dollars and the labour is the bill. Labour rates are on what it costs to retile a pool.

How many square metres of waterline tile do I need?

Measure the pool's perimeter at the waterline and multiply by the height of the band. We work two band heights, 150 mm and 300 mm; most mosaic sheets at these two retailers are 300–337 mm square, so 300 mm is about one sheet high.

PoolPerimeter150 mm band300 mm band
6 × 3 m18 m18 × 0.15 = 2.7 m²18 × 0.30 = 5.4 m²
8 × 4 m24 m24 × 0.15 = 3.6 m²24 × 0.30 = 7.2 m²
10 × 4 m28 m28 × 0.15 = 4.2 m²28 × 0.30 = 8.4 m²

Add an allowance for cutting around the skimmer, steps and corners. We use 10% in the worked costs below; that is our assumption for the arithmetic, not a published standard, so ask your tiler for theirs. Steps, a swim-out ledge or a spa spillway add their own edges and are not in these figures. The waterline area rule: perimeter in metres × band height in metres = square metres of tile, plus the tiler's cutting allowance.

What the waterline tile costs on an 8 × 4 m pool

A 300 mm band on an 8 × 4 m pool is 24 m × 0.30 m = 7.2 m²; with 10% for cuts, 7.92 m² of tile. At the retailer-published rates:

Tile, 8 × 4 m pool, 300 mm bandRate7.92 m² of tile
Ceramic mosaic (specialist)$58.06–$89.96/m²$459.84–$712.48
Glass mosaic (specialist)$71.96–$129.94/m²$569.92–$1,029.12
Glass mosaic (general retailer)$33–$75/m²$261.36–$594.00
Patterned border, 240 mm deep$55–$65 per lineal m × 24 m$1,320–$1,560

A patterned border is priced by the lineal metre because the design runs in one strip, 240 mm deep at the specialist retailer, which displays $65 a metre on one border's page while the same page's description says $55. Halve the band to 150 mm and the field-tile costs halve; the border does not. Why pool tiles fall off and cleaning calcium off pool tiles cover the waterline's two common problems.

Glass, ceramic, porcelain or stone around a pool

Glass and ceramic mosaics are the tiles sold for the pool interior and waterline; both retailers sell them as pool mosaics, and the specialist lists pool and waterline tiling as approved uses. The general retailer's porcelain and limestone lines sit in its pool-tile category but are 600 × 600 mm and 15–20 mm surround, paving and coping formats, so check the maker's rating before using any of them below the water. The specialist retailer quotes its porcelain pavers and commercial pool tiles on request rather than displaying a price. Coping and paving costs are on pool coping cost and pool paving cost; a full interior finish is on pool resurfacing cost.

When you have chosen a tile, ask each quote to name it and its price per square metre, the band height and the area, so you can see whether the difference between quotes is the tile or the labour. Compare pool quotes on the same specification.
