How much does a pool cost per square metre?
What a pool costs per square metre of water area in Australia, worked from two builders' published price lists by size: fibreglass from 4 × 2 m to 11 × 4 m, concrete from a 5 × 3 m plunge pool to 8 × 4 m. Why the crane, council approval and filtration make small pools dearer per square metre, and what each extra square metre costs your budget.
A pool costs about $1,700–$5,700 per square metre of water area installed in Australia, and the rate falls as the pool grows. On one builder's October 2026 list a 4 × 2 m fibreglass pool works out at $5,702/m² and an 11 × 4 m at $1,947/m²; a concrete builder's packages fall from $2,593/m² to $1,725/m².
The short answer
- Per square metre, small pools are dearest. One fibreglass builder's installed prices give $5,702/m² for a 4 × 2 m pool, $3,166/m² for 6 × 3 m, $2,215/m² for 8 × 4 m and $1,947/m² for 11 × 4 m.
- Concrete follows the same curve: a Brisbane builder's packages give $2,593/m² for a 5 × 3 m plunge pool, $2,300/m² for 6 × 3 m, $1,933/m² for 6 × 4 m and $1,725/m² for 8 × 4 m.
- Each extra square metre costs far less than the average: about $1,112 for fibreglass (4 × 2 m to 11 × 4 m) and $959 for concrete (5 × 3 m to 8 × 4 m).
- A national cost guide prices concrete at $1,700–$2,500 per m² of water area for an 8 × 4 m pool, $54,400–$80,000 before extras.
- The reason is fixed cost: the crane, approvals, electrician, filtration and handover cost about the same for a small pool as a big one.

How much does a pool cost per square metre?
Divide a published installed price by the pool's water area (length × width) and the answer is about $1,700 to $5,700 per square metre, depending almost entirely on size. One South East Queensland fibreglass builder lists an installed price for every model, updated October 2026: its 4 × 2 m pool is $45,613, or $5,702 a square metre, and its 11 × 4 m pool $85,659, or $1,947 a square metre. A Brisbane concrete builder's 2026 packages run from $38,900 for a 5 × 3 m plunge pool ($2,593/m²) to $55,200 for 8 × 4 m ($1,725/m²).
So a square-metre rate is only meaningful with a size attached. The pool is 2.9 times dearer per square metre at 8 m² than at 44 m², on the same builder's list. The quotable version: a pool's price per square metre falls as the pool gets bigger, because most of the cost of a small pool is the fixed cost of building any pool.
Why does a bigger pool cost less per square metre?
The fibreglass builder says it plainly on its cost page: fibreglass pools are not priced by area, and the smallest shells are not half the price of the large ones because many installation costs are the same for every size. It lists the crane, delivery, approvals and certification, the licensed electrician, the temporary barrier, handover and the filtration package as costs that stay roughly fixed, and the shell, excavation, gravel base, bond beam, coping and water as the costs that grow with the pool. Filtration moves in steps, not per litre.
Its cost page quotes the 4 × 2 m model at $46,053; we use the October model list's $45,613. Worked from the two ends of that list, going from 8 m² to 44 m² adds 36 m² and $40,046, so each extra square metre costs about $1,112.39, a fifth of the small pool's average rate. On the concrete builder's list, going from 15 m² to 32 m² adds 17 m² and $16,300: about $958.82 per extra square metre. Put another way, a 9 × 4 m fibreglass pool has double the water of a 6 × 3 m one for 34.3% more money, and the 8 × 4 m concrete package has 77.8% more water than the 6 × 3 m for 33.3% more.
The marginal metre rule: the first square metres of a pool carry the crane, the paperwork and the equipment; every square metre after that costs roughly $1,000. If your block allows it, the honest comparison is the price of the size you want against the size up, not the rate per square metre.
Concrete pool cost per square metre
The national lead-generation cost guide, read on 18 October 2026, prices a concrete pool's installed base package at $1,700–$2,500 per square metre of water area, typical $2,050, for a pool of about 8 × 4 m. On 32 m² that is $54,400–$80,000; the guide's separate installed range for a concrete inground pool is $55,000–$110,000. The guide gives the rate for that one size only; applying it to a 5 × 3 m pool would understate the cost, as the Brisbane builder's $2,593/m² plunge package shows.
The concrete builder's packages include equipment and a paving allowance, and the fibreglass builder's include council approval fees, so the two lists are not a like-for-like comparison of concrete against fibreglass. What a concrete pool costs, stage by stage and what a fibreglass pool costs installed compare the two types on their own terms.
Using a square-metre rate in your own budget
Pick the published price for a size close to yours, not a rate from a different size. Water area here is nominal length × width; fibreglass shells have rounded corners and steps, so the true water surface is smaller and the real rate a little higher. None of these prices includes a permanent barrier, heating, landscaping beyond the surround, or rock in the excavation, and both builders work in South East Queensland, so treat them as a shape, not a local price. The pool cost calculator walks every line of a budget, what size a plunge pool is shows where the small sizes start, and how much a pool costs in Australia gives the national ranges. When you know the size, compare pool quotes for it and the size up.
