How much does pool pump repair cost? A Victorian quote marketplace publishes $150–$250 for a diagnosis visit, $150–$280 for a seal kit fitted and $200–$350 for an impeller or bearing job, against $600–$1,100 for a new single-speed pump installed. A replacement motor is the exception: $790–$1,425 retail, more than a budget pump.

The short answer

  • Published fitted prices (Victoria, 8 April 2026): diagnosis $150–$250, seal kit $150–$280, impeller or bearings $200–$350, motor-only $400–$700 with electrical labour. Same-day call-outs add $80–$150.
  • Parts, read 28 October 2026: pump capacitors $36–$75 (one 2 hp capacitor $244), a bearing pair $19, impellers $80–$92 and single-speed motors $790–$1,425 at one parts retailer.
  • The motor-price test: the cheapest retail motor we found ($790) costs $175 more than the dearest of nine budget single-speed pumps at another retailer ($435–$615).
  • The half-the-pump rule: a seal job is 14–47% of a $600–$1,100 installed single-speed pump and an impeller or bearing job 18–58%; a motor is 36–117%. Below half, repair; above half, replace.
  • Capacitors and motor wiring are electrical work. Queensland’s regulator counts repairing electrical equipment as electrical work, with penalties up to $40,000 for doing it yourself.

How much does it cost to repair a pool pump? The half-the-pump rule

A pool pump repair is a part plus a visit, and the visit is often the bigger number. A Victorian quote marketplace publishes these fitted prices, labour and standard parts included, with electrical work and same-day call-outs priced separately (vendor-published, 8 April 2026):

  • Pump service and diagnosis: $150–$250; emergency or same-day call-out adds $80–$150.
  • Pump seal kit replacement: $150–$280.
  • Pump impeller replacement: $200–$350; elsewhere on the page, “a $200 to $350 impeller or bearing repair”.
  • Motor-only replacement, keeping the pump body: $400–$700 including electrical labour.
  • Single-speed pump replacement (1 hp): $600–$1,100 installed; variable-speed $1,200–$2,500.

The half-the-pump rule: divide the repair quote by the installed price of a like-for-like new pump. Below 50%, repair; above 50%, replace, because the new pump comes with a new warranty. On the marketplace’s own figures, a seal kit is 14–47% of a new single-speed pump installed ($150 ÷ $1,100 to $280 ÷ $600), so it is a repair at every pairing. An impeller or bearing job is 18–58%, a repair unless a quote above $300 meets the cheapest pump. A motor is 36–117%, which is why the motor is the fault that usually ends in a new pump.

That 50% line is our rule, not an industry standard. It sits beside the age-based rule on how long a pool pump lasts: run both, and replace if either says so.

A pool pump seal or impeller repair costs about 14–58% of a new single-speed pump installed, so it is usually worth doing; a new motor costs 36–117%, so it usually is not.

Pool pump motor replacement cost: the motor-price test

The two price sources disagree on the motor, and the disagreement is the useful part. The marketplace publishes motor-only replacement at $400–$700 including electrical labour. At one Australian parts retailer, read today, four replacement motors for one maker’s single-speed pumps were $790, $845, $1,336 and $1,425 as parts alone, a 3 hp motor $2,195, and two variable-speed (brushless) motors $2,178 and $2,301.

Meanwhile, nine budget single-speed pool pumps from 0.5 to 1.85 hp were $435–$615 at a second online retailer, complete with a new motor and a new warranty, and two variable-speed pumps were $1,249.99 and $1,806.20 at two retailers.

The motor-price test: before paying for a motor, price the whole pump. In our sample, the cheapest single-speed motor ($790) cost $175 more than the dearest budget pump ($615). A motor makes sense when it is for a premium or hard-to-match pump body that is otherwise sound and fits your plumbing, and the fitted quote is well under a new pump installed. Otherwise the motor quote is the moment to price a new pool pump and its running cost, including whether a variable-speed pump pays back.

A replacement pool pump motor can cost more than a whole budget single-speed pump: $790–$1,425 for one maker’s motors against $435–$615 for nine complete pumps, read 28 October 2026.

Pool pump capacitor and bearing repair cost

These are the two cheap parts that fail often. One pump maker’s guarantee lists capacitors and bearings, with mechanical seals, as consumables it does not cover, so expect to pay for them even on a young pump.

  • Capacitor: when a single-phase pump motor will not start, the capacitor is one of the parts an electrician tests. Four pool pump capacitors were $36, $46, $64 and $75 at one parts retailer today, and one for a 2 hp pump $244. The part is cheap, but the job is not DIY: Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office defines electrical work to include “repairing, altering, removing, or replacing of electrical equipment”, and DIY electrical work carries penalties of up to $40,000 for individuals. Energy Safe Victoria says unqualified electrical work is illegal as well as dangerous. We found no published fitted price; expect an electrician’s call-out on top of the part.
  • Bearings: a screech from the motor end is usually the motor bearings. A front and rear pair for one maker’s motors was $19, a single front bearing $36. The marketplace’s “$200 to $350 impeller or bearing repair” is almost all labour, because the motor comes apart; it also warns that a squealing motor can progress to seizure within days to weeks.

A tripped safety switch is a different diagnosis and is not priced here: why a pool pump keeps tripping the breaker. Nor is a pump that stops on hot days: why a pool pump keeps overheating.

Pool pump seal and impeller repair cost

Water under the pump is the shaft seal; the part prices, the leak locations and the cheaper O-ring fixes are on how to fix a pool pump leak, and this page does not repeat them. Fitted, the marketplace publishes $150–$280 for a seal kit. Weak flow, a rattle or a cracked impeller is $200–$350 fitted on the same page; impellers for one maker’s pumps were $80 and $92 as parts today.

Both are wet-end jobs on the pump body, which the marketplace says lasts 10–15 years if maintained, so on a sound body they pass the half-the-pump rule at almost every price. Before paying anyone for low flow, rule out a lost prime and blocked baskets for free: why a pool pump stops pumping water.

Pool pump repairs near me: what to ask before you pay

Published prices vary by city, and the sources we could verify are a marketplace and a lead-generation cost guide, not regulators. The Sydney cost guide (updated October 2026) publishes $690–$1,375 installed for a single-speed pump and $1,375–$2,525 for variable-speed, above the Victorian marketplace’s $600–$1,100 and $1,200–$2,500, and $170–$460 for an annual equipment service without parts. Treat both as ranges, not quotes.

  • Ask whether the call-out is included, and for the part number and part price in writing.
  • For a capacitor, motor or any wiring, ask whether the technician holds an electrical licence or brings an electrician.
  • Ask for the installed price of a like-for-like new pump in the same quote, so you can run the half-the-pump rule.

Common questions

Is it worth repairing a pool pump?
Usually, for a seal, impeller, bearings or capacitor: a Victorian quote marketplace publishes $150–$350 fitted for seal and impeller jobs against $600–$1,100 for a new single-speed pump installed. A failed motor usually is not, because a replacement motor can cost more than a budget pump.
How much does it cost to replace a pool pump motor?
The marketplace publishes $400–$700 including electrical labour; at one parts retailer on 28 October 2026, four single-speed motors were $790–$1,425 as parts alone. The sources disagree, so get the motor and a new pump priced in the same quote.
Can I replace a pool pump capacitor myself?
No. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office says electrical work includes repairing and replacing electrical equipment, and DIY electrical work carries penalties up to $40,000 for individuals. The part is $36–$75 for most pool pumps.
How much is a pool pump service call?
$150–$250 for a service and diagnosis visit, plus $80–$150 for same-day or emergency call-outs, on a Victorian marketplace’s published prices. A Sydney cost guide publishes $170–$460 for an annual equipment service without parts.
