How much does pool fencing cost in Adelaide?

Pool fencing prices in Adelaide for 2026: what the published glass and aluminium rates are worth, when a pool barrier needs development approval in South Australia, what PlanSA charges either side of the $10,000 line, the council inspection, and the pre-1993 pool rule at sale.

Updated 2026-10-12 6 sources cited

Pool fencing in Adelaide is published at $275–$735 a metre for glass and $92–$320 for aluminium by one cost guide, whose own Adelaide pool page says $350–$600 and $100–$250. A new pool safety fence needs development approval in South Australia; PlanSA fees on a fence costing under $10,000 start at $252.50.

The short answer

  • The published Adelaide prices disagree with themselves. One lead-generation cost guide prints $275–$735 a metre for glass and $92–$320 for aluminium on its Adelaide fencing page, and $350–$600 and $100–$250 on its Adelaide pool page.
  • The fencing page is a formula: each Adelaide figure is about 92% of the same guide's national figure ($300–$800 glass, $100–$350 aluminium). We found no Adelaide fencer publishing a price.
  • Approval: South Australia requires development approval for a new pool, spa and safety fencing; West Torrens Council says a fence that is or will be the barrier for a pool built on or after 1 July 1993 needs it.
  • The $10,000 line: PlanSA's July 2026 fees on a class 10 fence are $98.50 lodgement + $154 building assessment = $252.50 under $10,000, and $407.50 between $10,000 and $50,000.
  • Pre-1993 pools at sale: if the property is sold, the barrier must meet Ministerial Building Standard MBS 004 before settlement, separating the pool from the house wherever possible.

How much does glass pool fencing cost in Adelaide?

Every Adelaide figure we found comes from one national lead-generation cost guide, and it prints two different sets. Read on 12 October 2026, its Adelaide fencing page gives $275–$735 a metre for glass pool fencing (typical $460) and $92–$320 for aluminium (typical $185). Its Adelaide pool construction page gives $350–$600 a metre for glass (typical $475) and $100–$250 for aluminium (typical $170). We found no Adelaide fencer publishing an installed price.

The fencing page's numbers are also a formula. Its national page gives $300–$800 for glass and $100–$350 for aluminium, and every Adelaide figure is about 92% of the national one. Our Brisbane page found the same kind of formula between its Brisbane and Perth pages; see pool fencing prices in Brisbane.

On a 20-metre run that is $5,500–$14,700 for glass on one page and $7,000–$12,000 on the other, and $1,840–$6,400 or $2,000–$5,000 for aluminium. Pool fence cost in Australia and frameless glass pool fencing cost explain what moves the per-metre price.

Do I need approval for a pool fence in Adelaide?

The South Australian Government says development approval is required for a new swimming pool, spa pool and safety fencing, and that the council checks the details and location of the safety barriers. Fencing must be installed before a new pool is filled. Since 1 April 2014, the council must inspect a new pool within two months of the permanent, approved child-safety barriers being completed.

West Torrens Council puts the fence rule in one line: a fence that is, or is to be, a safety barrier for a pool built on or after 1 July 1993 requires development approval. Its page does not deal separately with like-for-like replacement, so ask your council before you replace a barrier. Gates to the pool area must swing outward, be self-closing from any position and have a latch at least 1.5 metres above the ground.

For an existing pool, the State says you are not required under the Planning, Development and Infrastructure Act 2016 to have it inspected, including when you sell. If you choose to, it recommends an accredited professional.

The $10,000 line: PlanSA fees on a pool fence

A pool fence is a class 10 structure. PlanSA's fees and charges at a glance for July 2026 set the fees by development cost: lodgement $98.50 under $10,000 and $158 from $10,000 to $50,000; building assessment for class 10 $154 or 0.25% of the cost, whichever is greater; and a class 10 compliance fee of $0 under $10,000 and $95.50 over. If the fence also needs planning consent, a deemed-to-satisfy assessment adds $151 under $10,000 or $250 over.

Worked: 20 metres of glass at the fencing page's typical $460 is $9,200, so PlanSA's fees are $98.50 + $154 = $252.50. At its $735 top rate the fence is $14,700 and the fees are $158 + $154 + $95.50 = $407.50. The schedule also lists a $287 swimming pool inspection; ask your council whether it is charged on a fence-only application.

The $10,000 line: in South Australia a pool fence costed at $10,000 or more pays $155 more in PlanSA fees than one under it, because the lodgement fee rises and a class 10 compliance fee starts. The deposit and insurance rules on a building contract are worked on the Adelaide plunge pool cost page.

Selling with a pool built before 1993

If a pool was built before 1 July 1993 and the property is not for sale, the State says the pool can keep complying with the old Swimming Pools Safety Act 1972, which requires it to be enclosed by a fence, wall or building. If the property is sold after 1 October 2008, the child-safety barriers must comply with Ministerial Building Standard MBS 004 before settlement, which means installing barriers to separate the pool area from the house wherever possible. Pools built on or after 1 July 1993 must meet the rules in force when their application was lodged.

For a seller, that can turn a pool fence into a settlement cost. Price it early; selling a house with a pool covers the other states. When you know the run length and the gate count, compare free pool quotes; pool builders in Adelaide lists who covers the city.
