How much does aluminium fencing cost in Australia?
What aluminium fencing costs per metre in Australia, broken down the way a price list is: 1200mm pool panels against 1800mm boundary panels, posts, self-closing gates and latch hardware, and do-it-yourself supply against installed. Every figure is from a supplier's published price list or a published cost guide, read on 30 September 2026, with a worked bill of materials for a 20-metre pool fence, which still has to pass its barrier compliance inspection.
Aluminium pool fencing costs about $40–$51 a metre in DIY 1200mm flat-top panels on four published price lists, and $115–$161 a metre for 1800mm boundary-height panels. Installed, guides publish $90–$350 a metre. A 20-metre DIY pool fence with one gate comes to about $1,117 in materials.
The short answer
- 1200mm pool panels: $40–$51 a metre, supply only. Stock 2450mm flat-top panels are listed at $97.95 to $125.40 each across four Australian suppliers.
- 1800mm costs 1.8 times as much. One supplier’s custom-made 2400mm panel is $214.25 at 1200mm high and $387.00 at 1800mm: $89 against $161 a metre.
- Gates and hardware: about $185 DIY. A 970mm flat-top gate is listed at $94.60 and a self-closing hinge and magnetic latch set at $92.40. Installed, one guide adds $200–$400 per gate.
- Installed: $90–$350 a metre, and the guides disagree. One publishes $90–$150 for tubular aluminium, another $100–$350 with $200 typical, a third $250–$350.
- 20m DIY pool fence: about $1,117 in materials, against $2,000–$2,800 installed on the cheapest published guide. The fence must still pass its barrier inspection.

How much is aluminium pool fencing per metre?
Divide the panel price by the panel width. Aluminium pool fencing is sold as panels, not by the metre, so this is how a price list becomes a per-metre figure. The standard stock panel is 2450mm wide and 1200mm high, which is the minimum barrier height, and four Australian suppliers list it at:
- $97.95–$110.95 depending on colour (a click-and-collect fencing supplier): $39.98–$45.29 a metre;
- $99.00 (a Queensland supplier that ships nationally): $40.41 a metre;
- $104.05–$111.15 depending on colour (a supplier with outlets in five states): $42.47–$45.37 a metre;
- $105.60 on sale, $125.40 regular (a Perth supplier): $43.10–$51.18 a metre;
- and from the Queensland supplier, $108.90 for a kit that includes an 1800mm in-ground post, four brackets and a cap: $44.45 a metre with a post already counted.
Posts are one per panel plus one to finish each run: $27.50–$29.15 for an 1800mm post that is concreted in or set into a core-drilled hole, or $35.20–$36.30 for a 1300mm base-plate post bolted to a slab.
The quotable version: on four Australian price lists read in September 2026, a 1200mm aluminium pool fence costs about $40 to $51 a metre in panels, before posts, gates and installation.
Our general pool fence cost guide sets aluminium against glass, steel and timber on the installed price. This page is the supply-side breakdown behind it.
What does 1800mm aluminium fencing cost compared with 1200mm?
About 1.8 times as much per metre on the one price list that sells both heights in the same specification. A supplier of custom-made flat-top panels lists a 2400mm-wide panel at $214.25 at 1200mm high and $387.00 at 1800mm, which is $89.27 against $161.25 a metre. Its custom gates show the same jump: $139.00 for a 975mm gate at 1200mm, and $386.00 for an 800–1200mm gate at 1800mm.
Stock 1800mm panels are cheaper than custom ones. Another supplier lists a pool-certified 1800mm × 2400mm flat-top panel at $277.00, or $115.42 a metre. The posts get dearer too: a Perth supplier lists a 2400mm post at $58.30, against under $30 for a 1800mm post on a 1200mm fence.
People buy 1800mm panels when the pool fence is also the boundary fence. That is allowed in some cases, but a boundary section of a pool barrier carries extra climbability rules on the neighbour’s side. Whether your boundary fence can be the pool barrier explains them. Check the rules before you pay the 1800mm premium, because a boundary fence that fails as a barrier gives you the extra cost and none of the benefit.
The quotable version: an 1800mm aluminium boundary panel costs about 1.8 times a 1200mm pool panel of the same design on the same price list.
DIY or installed: a 20-metre aluminium pool fence worked out
This bill of materials uses one supplier’s published list, so you can substitute your own supplier line by line. The fence is eight bays of 1200mm panel plus one gate, about 20.6 metres.
- 8 panel kits (panel, in-ground post, brackets) at $108.90: $871.20
- 2 extra 1800mm posts, one to close the run and one for the gate, at $29.15: $58.30
- 1 gate, 970mm × 1200mm: $94.60
- 1 self-closing hinge and magnetic latch set: $92.40
- Materials total: $1,116.50, or about $54 a metre
That excludes concrete or chemical anchor, core-drill hire, delivery, and your time. Installed, one published guide puts 20 metres with one gate at $2,000–$2,800 ($90–$150 a metre plus $200–$400 for the gate). At a second guide’s typical $200 a metre, 20 metres is $4,000 before the gate; a third publishes $250–$350 a metre. The difference between your materials bill and the installed price is what you pay for labour, footings, rework risk and the installer’s compliance paperwork.
The DIY threshold: on the cheapest published installed rate, doing it yourself saves roughly $900 to $1,700 on a 20-metre fence. That saving is only real if the fence passes inspection the first time. The barrier is inspected as a pool barrier either way. In Queensland, the QBCC says the certifier who approved the pool must certify the fence before the final inspection certificate. In WA, the local government must inspect a new pool’s barrier within 30 days of becoming aware it is complete. A DIY fence fails on the same details a professional one does: gate latch height, gaps, and the non-climbable zone.
If the fence is part of a new pool, it is usually cheaper to have it quoted with the pool. Compare pool quotes with the fence priced as a line item, or browse builders in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane.
Why published aluminium fence prices disagree
Three installed-price guides read on 30 September 2026 publish $90–$150, $100–$350 and $250–$350 a metre for aluminium pool fencing. None of them says what height, post type or ground it assumes, so the ranges are not measuring the same fence. Three things explain most of the spread:
- Height and spec. On the price lists above, a custom 1800mm panel costs four times a stock 1200mm panel per metre ($161.25 against $40.41).
- Fixing. Setting posts in soil, core-drilling existing concrete and bolting base plates are different jobs with different labour.
- Style. Slat screening and batten fencing are sold in the same ‘aluminium fencing’ category. One general fencing guide publishes aluminium slat screening at $150–$350 a metre, and not every slat design is pool-compliant.
Ask every quote for the same five lines: metres of panel at each height, number of posts and how they are fixed, number of gates, the hinge and latch hardware, and whether the installer attends the barrier inspection. For the glass alternative, see glass vs aluminium pool fencing.
