How much does a pool service cost per month in Australia?
What a hired pool service costs in Australia per visit, per month and per year: water testing, the pump and filtration check, the chlorinator, and whether a landlord or tenant pays. By visit frequency, and where doing it yourself stops being the cheaper option. Published price lists put a regular service at $65 to $120 a visit, with chemicals usually charged on top, and cost guides publish $100 to $250. A threshold table compares DIY, a monthly check, fortnightly and weekly service so you can budget the hired service separately from the power and chemicals. Prices are vendor-published.
A regular pool service costs about $65–$120 a visit on published Australian price lists: roughly $77–$120 a month for a monthly visit, $141–$206 fortnightly and $282–$412 weekly. Chemicals are usually extra. One national cost guide puts a typical ongoing service at $180 a month. All vendor-published.
The short answer
- Per visit: $65–$95 on a regular program at one national pool-care franchise, $77–$120 on a monthly program, and from $59–$79 a visit on one Gold Coast price list.
- Cost guides publish more: $100–$250 a regular visit, and $100–$300 a month for an ongoing service, $180 typical.
- Chemicals are usually extra. The franchise says its service-call price covers up to about one hour of labour, with chemicals and parts charged on top.
- The cheapest hand-over is DIY plus a monthly visit: $924–$1,440 a year at $77–$120 a visit. Fortnightly at $65–$95 is $1,690–$2,470.
- One-off jobs: $150–$350 for a clean, $300–$800 for green pool recovery, on one national cost guide.

How much does a pool service cost per month?
Pool services are priced per visit, so the monthly figure is the visit price times the visits. The published per-visit prices read for this page:
- One national pool-care franchise publishes $65–$95 a visit on a regular service program (its minimum recommendation is every 4 weeks) and $77–$120 a visit on a monthly program, and the same $77–$120 for a one-off service call, depending on state and city.
- One Gold Coast pool-care business lists a pool health check from $59, a standard service from $69 and a premium service from $79 a visit.
- One national cost guide publishes a regular maintenance visit at $100–$250, and an ongoing monthly service at $100–$300, typically $180. Another marketplace says a maintenance company typically charges around $100 a visit.
So a monthly visit is about $77–$120 a month, a fortnightly service $141–$206 a month at the franchise’s program price (26 visits ÷ 12 months), and a weekly service $282–$412 a month. At the cost guide’s $100–$250 a visit, fortnightly is $217–$542 a month. The two sources do not agree, and the price you get depends on your city, your pool’s size and how much is wrong with it on the first visit.
The quotable version: a fortnightly pool service costs about $141 to $206 a month at published program prices, before chemicals.
What is included in a pool service, and what is extra
The franchise is explicit about this. Its service-call price is the amount to show up, and usually covers up to about one hour of labour. Chemicals to balance the water, accessories and equipment are charged on top. A Gold Coast operator lists the usual tasks as testing pH, chlorine and alkalinity, vacuuming, brushing walls and tiles, emptying skimmer baskets, and checking and cleaning the filter and pump. It also says some low-cost services exclude chemicals or equipment checks.
That gives you three questions to ask before comparing two prices:
- Are chemicals included, and if not, how are they charged?
- Does the visit include a filter clean, or is that a separate line? One cost guide prices a cartridge filter clean at $80–$150.
- How long does the technician stay? A price per visit with no time attached cannot be compared.
The one-hour rule: a pool service visit buys about one hour of a technician’s time, so its price is effectively an hourly rate, with the chemicals billed separately.
Is it cheaper to maintain my own pool? The honest crossover
Doing it yourself is always cheaper in cash, because you buy the same chemicals either way. One national cost guide publishes DIY chemicals at $500–$1,200 a year. What you are buying from a service is the hour, the test equipment and the habit.
Use the threshold table above like this:
- Below about $65 an hour, the value you put on your own time: do it yourself. A fortnightly service is 26 visits at $65–$95, about 26 hours of someone else’s time for $1,690–$2,470 a year.
- If you will do the weekly jobs but not the chemistry: a monthly visit at $77–$120 is the cheapest hand-over, at $924–$1,440 a year. That is a little over half the cost of the cheapest fortnightly program.
- If you are away for weeks at a time, or the pool is in a rental: the cost to compare is the green pool. One guide prices recovery at $300–$800 a job, and a single missed summer month can cost that. Landlords should also read landlords and pools.
The service is separate from the power and chemicals you pay either way. For those, see what a pool costs to run per year and the best ways to reduce pool running costs.
The crossover in one line: if your hour is worth less than about $65, maintain the pool yourself; if you will skim but not test, a monthly visit is the cheapest hand-over.
How much does pool maintenance cost per year?
Published annual figures range widely because they include different things. One marketplace says most Australians spend $600–$1,500 a year on pool maintenance. One national cost guide publishes professional fortnightly maintenance at $2,400–$6,000 a year, and a total of $2,500–$5,000 a year once chemicals, power and servicing are added. A Gold Coast operator publishes $1,000–$2,000. The first is mostly DIY, and the others include a hired service.
For the equipment that a service visit may find worn out, the same cost guide publishes pump replacement at $500–$1,500 installed and a salt chlorinator cell at $400–$1,000; see pool equipment explained. If you are still planning the pool, ask builders for the equipment model numbers and the expected service schedule, and compare pool quotes from builders in Sydney, the Gold Coast or Perth.
